Marigolds

Scatter on surface of worked soil or pot. Water thoroughly. Does best in full sun but is shade tolerant. Plant alongside veggies for a natural pest repellent. Pluck heads as they wither to prolong blooming, these can be dried and saved for their seeds. Simply break apart dried husk to expose seeds. Viable seeds will be dark or have a dark streak.

Zinnias

These flowers will grow in just about any soil conditions and are great for beginners. Scatter seeds on worked soil and water thoroughly. Full sun is best but work with what you have. Cut bouquets often and these flowers will keep producing until the frost. The petals are the seeds. You can collect them by pucking and drying the heads or waiting till they dry on the plant. You can save the full head or remove the seeds by crushing the heads. Save in a cool dry place for next year.

Sunflowers (Mammoth)

Plant seeds 1" deep and space them 6" or more. Water thoroughly and daily thereafter. Full sun is preferred. Save seeds for next year by pulling the head once the florets have dried completely or fallen off. You can dry the head by hanging it or you can remove the seeds and dry them on a tray. Save the seeds in a cool dry place in a paper bag.

Black Eyed Susans

Scatter seeds on soil and water thoroughly. These flowers reseed themselves so consider this when planting. To save the seeds simply pluck the dried heads and crush them to release the tiny black seeds. Store in a cool dry place for next year or direct sow in the fall.
